Total hip replacement is the second most common elective surgical procedure performed in the UK. It is estimated that by 2010 Europe will have more people over 60 years of age than under 20 years. The number of total hip replacements will therefore continue to rise in an ageing population, as will the frequency of occurrence of periprosthetic fractures. These injuries may occur during or after operation. The incidence of post-operative periprosthetic fractures has remained relatively constant, ranging from 0.6% after primary arthroplasty to 2.4% after revisions.1 This article deals only with post-operative fractures, and seeks to review the available surgical techniques and to develop a management algorithm.

Periprosthetic fractures around loose femoral components.
The development of periprosthetic fractures around loose femoral components can be a devastating event for patients who have undergone total hip arthroplasty (THA). As indications for THA expand in an aging population and to use in younger patients, these fractures are increasing in incidence. This review covers the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention, and clinical management of periprosthet...

Postoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures around the stem of a total hip arthroplasty are increasing in frequency. To obtain optimal results, full appreciation of the clinical evaluation, classification, and modern management principles and techniques is required. Although periprosthetic femoral fracture associated with a loose stem requires complex revision arthroplasty, fractures associa...
متن کاملPeriprosthetic Atypical Femoral Fracture-like Fracture after Hip Arthroplasty: A Report of Three Cases
Atypical femoral fractures are stress or insufficient fractures induced by low energy trauma or no trauma and have specific X-ray findings. Although the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research has excluded periprosthetic fractures from the definition of an atypical femoral fracture in 2013, this is still a matter of controversy because some authors report periprosthetic fractures showing...
متن کاملTreatment of periprosthetic femoral fractures after femoral revision using a long stem
BACKGROUND Periprosthetic femoral fractures are becoming increasingly common and are a major complication of total hip arthroplasty and hemiarthroplasty. The treatment of periprosthetic femoral fracture after femoral revision using a long stem is more complex and challenging. The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical and radiographical features of periprosthetic femoral fractures a...
متن کاملRadiological Evaluation of Treatment of Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures.
BACKGROUND Periprosthetic fracture of the femur is a common complication of total hip replacement surgery. There are several risk factors, including the female gender, an uncemented implant, the use of a straight or revision stem and secondary osteoarthritis. The aim of the study was a radiological evaluation of treatment of periprosthetic femoral fractures Material and methods. The study group...
متن کاملCement-in-cement stem revision for Vancouver type B periprosthetic femoral fractures after total hip arthroplasty
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Revision surgery for periprosthetic femoral fractures around an unstable cemented femoral stem traditionally requires removal of existing cement. We propose a new technique whereby a well-fixed cement mantle can be retained in cases with simple fractures that can be reduced anatomically when a cemented revision is planned. This technique is well established in femoral ste...
